I wish I had some sort of superpower to send all the YA fiction from the last few years back into the past so that my teenaged-self could read them. Seriously, the rise of the fantasy, dystopian, gritty, and fairytale YA novels are what I used to dream of, but when I was growing up, these books just weren't as widely available as today. Unfortunately, I've grown out of a lot of YA books, but there are few favourites that I like to go back to revisit.
Holly Black's A Modern Faerie Tale books were my first glimpse into a world where the heroes of the story aren't squeaky clean and perfect. I loved all of it, especially the brooding fey characters that become entangled in the heroines' lives.
In the first book, Tithe, Kaye is a rebellious teenager who discovers the dark world and wars of the fey when she accidentally rescues a faerie knight. The second book, Valiant, is about a different characters. Val, has run away from home, but to save her friend, finds herself indentured to a troll. Finally, Ironside continues Kaye's story and struggle as she finds herself on a quest to prove her worth to the fey worlds.
There are only three books in the trilogy and I am so sad that Holly Black has not written more. I want to know about these characters struggles as they move between the human and the faerie worlds, but alas, we only get the three. Black has other wonderful novels and series as well, but I'm still hoping for a continuation of the series.
