So, I have a tendency to be reading more than one book at once. I start some of them, but then take a really long break in between before finishing them. I have about three books that I am reading right now (I actually have more, but let's not talk about those ones...).
Since I am only allowed to pick one book for this category, I guess I will go with North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell.
It is about a young English woman who moves to an industrial, northern English town with her family. She meets a mill-owner whose philosophies and perspective of the world is very different from her own. As someone once said (and I can't remember who), it is essentially "Pride and Prejudice for socialists".
I love the BBC miniseries and I highly recommend it (but only if you enjoy English period dramas because it's divided into 4 parts and can be quite tedious if you don't enjoy that kind of thing). I've been really enjoying the the some of the inner thoughts of the characters that we don't really see in the screen adaptation. The prose is fairly easy to read and not nearly as convoluted as some of the other classic literature.
Runners-Up:

Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare This one that I've been really working on, but I want to use Shakespeare for a later category so this one ends up a runner-up. My sister has been really bugging me to finish this one and I have been meaning to because I really want to watch the Joss Whedon adaptation with Alexis Denisoff, Amy Acker, Clark Gregg, Nathan Fillion (and all the other wonderful actors). I haven't made it too far in, but so far, the banter between Benedick and Beatrice have been sharp and definitely sets them up with the whole "we are going to fall in love with each other but first, we must argue to show off how witty we both are" scheme. | Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin I KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO NED AND I CAN'T BRING MYSELF TO GO ANY FURTHER!! |
